The Standard Ice & Fuel Company was organized in 1903 by a group of Pittsburg businessmen who saw that as the town was growing the demand for ice also was increasing. They built their first plant at Second and Pine. Their business continued growing so much that in 1910 they built a second $50,000 plant at Sixth and Grand, to distribute ice to the surrounding coal camps and to supply ice for the Kansas City Southern Railroad to use in their cars. In April 1928, the American Service Company purchased the Standard Ice & Fuel Company and continued serving the ice needs of the community with blocks of ice for their "ice appliances." By 1951 it was also selling crushed ice in bags. |
