The
S. H. Kress Store in Pittsburg was located at 619 N. Broadway
in the Kirkwood Building. The building housed the Hotel
Wick upstairs with retail on the lower floor. Today
the building is home to a furniture store and the upstairs
is empty. Samuel H. Kress (1863-1955) opened
his first S. H. Kress & Company 5-10-25 Cent store
in 1896 at Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. It was purchased
by Genesco, Inc in 1964 and they began liquidating the
Kress stores closing the last store in 1981. In the 1920's
and 1930's, the store sold phonograph records under their
house label "Romeo Records."
