Brandenburg Stadium
was built between 1922 and 1924 in an unique way. It
was against state law for a legislature to fund building
of recreational centers, but they could fund recreation
and athletic fields, so in 1917 a small appropriation
of $1500 was made for the grounds of a new facility.
To get the needed financing, funds were raised by the
students, alumni and friends of the college. To help
defray the cost of building the new facility, each male
faculty member was required to put in a mandatory eights
hours of labor in helping build the stadium. It was dedicated
on Armistice Day, 1924 and named after the first and
longest serving President of the college, William Aaron
Brandenburg. On the front of the columns of the stadium
are bas reliefs done by Waylande Gregory, graduate of
College High School. |
